Shell Bath Freezers

Shell freezing is the classic method of preparing samples for freeze drying.

By freezing a thin coating or “shell” around the inside of a flask, a greater volume of material can be processed during each freeze drying run than if the flask had been merely filled. In shell freezing, flasks are automatically rotated by motor driven rollers in a refrigerated bath containing alcohol or any other appropriate fluid. Shell freezers provide a simple and efficient means of pre-freezing many flasks at a time.

VirTis offers two models of shell baths.

The Freezemobile ShellBath is available with single or dual (“cascade”) compressors, with capacities of up to two 2000ml flasks at a time or up to six 150ml.

The new Benchtop ShellBath is a smaller version, designed to fit on to almost any laboratory benchtop, and is able to process up to two 1200ml flasks or up to four 40ml flasks at a time.

The Virtis Shell Baths are designed to accompany the Freezemobile and Benchtop “BTK” series freeze dryer, which are available with a range of condensers and options. A wide range of manifold sizes and accessories is available for all these systems, including purpose- designed wide-mouth filter seal flasks and patented Quickseal valves.
